I
just wanted to send a note to everyone regarding the exquisite
performance the Lassiter High School Orchestra and their
Director Carol Doemel had on Tuesday evening at the Midwest
Clinic in Chicago Illinois. This prestigious event is by
invitation only. After I heard the concert I quickly realized
why this orchestra not only received the invitation, but
performed in the premier time slot, right before The United
States Army Orchestra.
The high level of
musicianship was quickly realized on the opening piece "Carpe
Diem!". In addition to the pristine intonation, the performance was
clean and exciting. These characteristics carried throughout each
piece performed. It was also obvious that many hours was spent
choosing such an eclectic program. The variety of music performed
highlighted the flexibility of the students and their conductors. No
matter the style of the music, the orchestra executed each piece
with precision, style, energy and the highest level of musicianship.
The highlight for me however was "The Divertimento for String
Orchestra" by Bela Bartok. This masterpiece work for string
orchestra is one of the most challenging in the repertoire. The
precision of the notes, the balance, blend, and beauty of the
musical line was truly inspiring.
I would be remiss not
mention the collaboration that was so apparent in the presentation.
It was a true pleasure seeing colleagues not only working together,
but supporting each other as well. Congratulations to Laura Borchert,
Chris Doemel, and James Thompson, Jr. Their performances were
inspiring as well. It was also great to see Alfred Watkins providing
support and help to the entire organization.
I have been going to
The Midwest Clinic for many years and have heard dozens of
orchestras perform there. Very few perform well enough to leave a
lasting impression. However, as I return to the Midwest clinic in
the years to come, not only will I remember the 2008 performance by
The Lassiter High School Orchestra and their Director Carol Doemel,
I will enjoy talking about how wonderful it was to my colleagues and
friends that I see there.
Respectfully,
Jim Palmer
CONGRATULATIONS!
The 62nd Annual Midwest Clinic is now history, but your
outstanding performance will long be remembered by those of us
who where fortunate enough to be in the audience. We were the
benefactors of your obvious commitment and dedication to
EXCELLENCE.
As always, LASSITER
HIGH SCHOOL demonstrates a level of EXCELLENCE unknown in common
hours. This is a reflection of a set of standards that benefit ALL
who are fortunate enough to be a part of exemplary music learning
and music making. I wish EVERY child could have this experience;
those who attend Lassiter DO enjoy this rich tradition: what a gift.
It is always exciting
to witness extraordinary young musicians sharing their skills and
talents with such artistry. THANK YOU for your memorable musical
GIFT. It is the collective efforts of many (teachers, students,
parents, administrators, and community members) who support this
lifetime opportunity. Your concert stands as a tribute to EVERYONE
who was a part of the total contribution.
In every discipline
there are certain events that are considered to be among the
ultimate. As you know the Midwest stage represents the Olympics of
our music education world; all aspire to receive the coveted
invitation. You are now a member of the elite group of musicians who
have achieved this given goal; it is truly an accomplishment of
noteworthy praise and due celebration. BRAVO!
With best wishes for
continued success, I remain,
Tim Lautzenheiser
